Thursday, 22 February (1900-2030) – Munich Dialogues on Democracy / Amerikahaus Hybrid Event – Prof Ian Shapiro: “Angry Populist Politics – Why It is Happening and What to Do About It“ – Amerikahaus (Theater), Karolinenplatz 3, 80333 Munich. Ian Shapiro, Sterling Professor of Political Science at Yale University, has written widely and influentially on democracy, justice, and the methods of social inquiry. With over 70 elections worldwide this year, our special focus will be on the European parliament elections in June and most importantly on the November US elections. Since 2016, there been a dramatic erosion of support for establishment parties worldwide in favor of populist and even anti-system ones in so many countries. Why? Ian Shapiro will answer that question, explain why many of the proposed remedies either have no effect or make things worse, and then outline changes that could help restore democratic confidence. The American photographer explores the socio-cultural identity of this swing state and shows how Florida is emblematic of today’s polarized USA. Her pictures illustrate the urban centers along with deceptive advertising promises and luxurious real estate plus desolate landscapes or wild nature.
