Fake news as defined by Wikipedia is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.[1] Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead in order to gain financially or politically, often with sensationalist, exaggerated, or patently false headlines that grab attention.[2]
Within seconds of the deadly Las Vegas attack, mainstream platforms such as Facebook and Google started circulating politicized fake news about who the Las Vegas shooter was in the latest example of fake news polluting social media amid a breaking news story. The flow of misinformation on Monday illustrated a particularly grim trend.
Sabine Wolf , a free-lance German journalist, author and moderator based in Munich, will be speaking to us about her perspective on fake news at our next meeting on October 18th. Ms. Wolf has worked for more than 20 years for German public television stations such as ARD and the Bayerische Rundfunk among others, as an investigative journalist and filmmaker with a focus on economy, finance and politics. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the Bayerischen Fernsehpreis in 2012 and the Ernst-Schneider Preis in 2011, 2012 and 2015. Most recently she was recognized for her documentary about counterfeit medications for ARD.
